Home Remedies for Scabies

Scabies is a skin condition which is caused by an infestation of the scabies mite. This condition is characterized by classic symptoms of angry red rashes, intense itching and sometimes intense pain. It can also be embarrassing or stigmatizing for people as it is associated with being poor and/or dirty (which is a total myth). The good news is, however, that there are many natural treatment options – includes herbal remedies and essential or other natural oils – to choose from to treat this skin condition and restore the skin to health.

Natural Remedies for Scabies

There are actually a fairly wide number of herbal treatments available for those who are suffering from scabies. These herbs can treat the problem gently but effectively with plant-based products. Options for natural scabies treatment include:

  • White Vinegar

While apple cider vinegar gets most of the attention with all its amazing medicinal properties, white vinegar, too, can be very useful – especially as a scabies treatment. Topical use of this vinegar kills off both mites and their eggs due to its high acidity and can be applied to the skin when mixed with equal parts water.

  • Oatmeal

Adding oatmeal in a bag of cheesecloth to the bathtub or even applying it to the skin as a paste mixed with water will not kill off the mites but it will help relieve the pain, itching and burning associated with scabies and is a great additional treatment to some of the other natural remedies listed in this article.

  • Cayenne Pepper

Natural Remedies Cayenne PepperUsing a cream with capsaicin, the compound in cayenne which gives these peppers their characteristic heat, can help by literally burning up the mites that are the root cause of this problem. Capsaicin can also help with the pain because it has natural analgesic properties and is able to block signals of pain that the nerve cells send to the brain.

  • Turmeric

Apply a paste made of ground turmeric mixed with a little water to the affected area is a great way to cleanse it and to reduce inflammation and pain, though it will not be effective at killing off the mites themselves.

  • Garlic

Garlic, applied as a paste to the affected area, is effective at killing of scabies by basically smothering them. Garlic’s antioxidant and antiseptic properties can also help to cleanse the area and promote healing in the skin.

  • Aloe Vera

Applying gel from the aloe vera plant to the effective area provides a cooling and soothing affect which helps to relieve pain and inflammation. Compounds in aloe vera gel also help to heal and regenerate the skin, making it less likely that blemishes or scar will result from the infestation.
