Having a flaking, itching dry scalp isn’t fatal – but it can be embarrassing and can make life very uncomfortable for those who have this condition. And the fact is that there are a number of things that can cause the scalp to become dry and irritated: fungal or bacterial infections, skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, allergic reactions to hair care products and even things like anxiety, stress or poor diet.  Whatever the reason, though, there are natural remedies that can help.

Natural Remedies for Treating a Dry Scalp

People with this problem will be happy to know that when it comes to treating a dry scalp, there are many natural options available to restore it to health and to get rid of the itching and flaking which can often accompany this condition. Natural treatments for dry scalp to consider include the following:

  • Lemon and honey

Mixing up a thin paste of lemon juice and honey and applying it to the scalp is a great remedy: the acidity of the lemon can kill of bacteria and fungus and help to slough off dead skin cells while honey provides deep moisturizing and nourishing treatment – and has anti-microbial properties of its own.

  • Aloe

Many people value aloe for its ability to cool and soothe burns, but these same properties can reduced the redness, dryness or irritation of an inflamed scalp and provide a deep moisturizing treatment as well. Rub into the scalp, leave on for 10-20 minutes, then shampoo and condition.

  • Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has been long been used as a hair and scalp tonic for a number of reasons. Firstly, its acidity changes the pH of the scalp and makes the area more inhospitable to bacteria and fungus both. It also has strong anti-inflammatory properties and is nutrient rich to help nourish and support a healthy scalp. Use in diluted form as a hair rinse, then shampoo and condition as usual.

  • Witch hazel

Extract from the witch hazel tree has been used for hundreds of years for a variety of skin conditions, including a dry or flaking scalp. Its natural astringent properties fight this condition gently by effectively and it can help to relieve the itchiness that is one of the most irritating symptoms of this problem.

Any one of the remedies listed can help to relieve the discomfort and embarrassment of this condition and restore the scalp naturally to a healthy, moisturized softness.
